In the summer of 2007, Paweł Łączny photographed the Catholic pilgrimage from Wroclaw to the Jasna Góra Monastery, in his native Poland, where more than ninety per cent of the population belongs to the church. Each year, thousands participate in the roughly two-hundred-mile pilgrimage to the monastery, which is home to an icon of the Virgin Mary venerated throughout Eastern Europe. The experience piqued Laczny’s interest in what faith looks like, especially in a society where social and political life is so deeply influenced by it.
